The History of Western Hills

Western Hills was originally part of the Symmes Purchase, and was merely forestland until the early 1900s when commerce in the area extended along Glenway Avenue. The introduction of the automobile encouraged many to move into the area after World War II, so Western Hills has a rich German-Catholic heritage.

The Western Hills Country Club was established in 1913, and Western Hills High School opened in 1928. This renowned high school is famous for several notable alumni, including singer Andy Williams, and 10 baseball and football players who ended up becoming professional athletes, including Pete Rose.

Located northwest of downtown, Green Township is a large area with forestland and several parks, including Bicentennial Park, Kuliga Park, Blue Rock Park, and more.

The area is served by the Western Hills Country Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious private clubs in the city, featuring a golf course designed by Scottish golfer and designer Tom Bendelow.
