The History of Fairlawn

Fairlawn was originally founded as a hamlet in 1891 when the Northern Ohio Railway was constructed. By 1908, it had a mill, a general store, a blacksmith, and other small businesses. It was officially incorporated as Fairlawn Village in 1958 and became a city when its population reached 6,200 in 1970.

To the west of Akron lies the city of Fairlawn. This suburban area is less than 10 miles from the heart of the city. I-77 passes alongside town, making it highly accessible from Akron and neighboring areas.

Fairlawn hosts an ever-widening commercial shopping district anchored by the upscale Fairlawn Plaza, Shops of Fairlawn, West Market Plaza, Fairlawn Town Center, Summit Mall, and other collections of or stand-alone shops and restaurants. This popular shopping district stretches into the adjacent Copley and Bath Townships. The collection of luxury hotels in Fairlawn are often chosen to host presidential motorcades or celebrities making appearances in Akron.

There are a number of golf courses in the area, including Fairlawn Country Club, Rosemont Country Club, and J.E. Good Park Golf Course. Nestled between Fairlawn and Akron, Sand Run Metro Park is a 1,000-acre nature preserve with a wetland, providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Bicentennial Park hosts the annual Fourth of July Independence Day Parade with fireworks, and the Summer Outdoor Concert Series every year.
