Located just north of downtown, Over-the-Rhine is perhaps the most famous neighborhood in Cincinnati. It is considered the most intact and largest urban historic district in the United States, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Bisected by Liberty Street, Over-the-Rhine features several distinct districts, including The North Liberties and the Brewery District located north of Liberty Street, and the Gateway Quarter and Pendleton located south of Liberty Street. The Brewery District was the heart of the city’s beer brewing industry prior to the Prohibition and still hosts a number of local craft breweries. North of Liberty Street resembles historic Over-the-Rhine better than other areas that have been developed in recent years.

Annual events here include Bockfest, the Cincy Fringe Festival, MidPoint Music Festival, Cincinnati May Festival, and Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade. Major landmarks in Over-the-Rhine include Cincinnati Music Hall, the Emery Theatre, the Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, Know Theatre of Cincinnati, Memorial Hall, and more. Findlay Market is the oldest continuously operated public market in the state, and is the site of many special events and a farmers market.
