The History of Short North

The name “Short North” goes back to an original nickname given by police to the area during a period of decline. It was seen as a neighborhood that had fallen “just short” of the north end of the central business district. A distinctively diverse and artistic neighborhood, the Short North has experienced gentrification and a steady economic rise from its humble beginnings prior to the 1980s. During this decade, the neighborhood experienced a rebirth as local art galleries opened, and the area began to flourish. In 1984, two Short North galleries—one of which is still in operation—opened new exhibits on the first Saturday of every month to promote their businesses and build a unified community culture. This event evolved into the Gallery Hop, which is still held on the first Saturday of every month on High Street.

The Short North is a vibrant and energetic arts district in Columbus, located directly north of downtown extending to the area just south of the Ohio State University campus area. Activity in the Short North’s Art District centers on the trendy and popular High Street, lined with art galleries, restaurants, specialty shops, pubs, nightclubs and coffee shops. The street is comprised of an eclectic mix of buildings packed together, most of which date back to the early 20th century. The Short North features a variety of local businesses, offices, historic apartment buildings, rowhouses, and new condominium developments. The city installed 17 lighted metal archways extending across High Street, reminiscent of arches in the area during the early 1900s.

This culturally rich area is pedestrian-friendly, as visitors and residents may easily travel to and from the district’s many establishments. Additionally, they may access the many nearby attractions in the heart of Downtown Columbus, including the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Nationwide Arena, Huntington Park and much more. Each month, the Short North hosts the Gallery Hop in which thousands of visitors converge on High Street to celebrate art with gallery exhibitions, street performances, special events, food and drinks. The Short North also hosts the annual Columbus Gay Pride Parade and a number of other events and festivals.
